Apartment living as a family of 6

Since our second daughter was born we have lived in two different houses and they were both two stories, with lots of space (we lived in apartments leading up to that). Our last house was a large split entry that was beautiful. But huge. We made the decision to move closer to our work this past Spring to work better with our schedules which are not the typical 9-5. Being only 3 minutes from the church allows us a lot more freedom.

The problem with moving closer was renting something in our price range would not mean renting a house. We made the choice to rent an apartment. It is a brand new complex (as in it was still under construction when we moved in). We were the fifth family to rent which meant we were able to pick from all but four units.

imageWe made the choice of a bottom unit since our kids like throwing toys and themselves over things. We also picked a back unit that has a nice grassy area on the other side of our deck. So we get a lawn that we don’t have to mow!!

We went with a two bedroom plus den because it was cheaper than a three bedroom plus den and we didn’t want the extra space. Because we picked a corner unit our den has a window and a closet, which means it is just another bedroom.

imageWe downsized a lot of our possessions, toys, and clothes so that we could live comfortably. Since we have four girls they each share a room with another sibling. We use IKEA loft beds since our kids are younger, and bunk beds scare me.

Our neighbourhood boasts of a sweet playground up the street that we go to daily, and a Rec centre next door (we live right next to the high school which is also the rec centre). So we can do activities all year there.

imagePart of living in an apartment that drew us in was the cost of living. We live in a fairly expensive area which limits our family on where we can live. Our apartment includes our rent and all utilities but our power. This allows us to budget better, to live in the community that we want to live in, and use the extra money and time we save from driving back and forth to spend with our kids and to do fun experiences with them.

Not every family will want to make an apartment their home. We love it however. We have heated underground parking, no lawn to mow, or driveway to shovel. We rent because we have no desire to buy a house currently and we have a great super who gets things fixed fast.

Our building has a gym so we save on memeberships and have a place to workout no matter the weather, which means a healthier household. We have our own laundry which was a must with so many kids and cloth diapers. We have a ton of closets (3 in the main living area, 2 in the girls rooms, our walk in closet, a laundry room with storage space, and storage with our parking spot). We also have two bathrooms which is great with kids. Downsizing has made us think about what we bring into the house and we have less toys to be scattered. If someone says they are coming over to my house I can clean it really fast because there is not a lot to clean.

Oh and our walls seem pretty thick so I don’t think our neighbours have heard the high pitched screams of our tiny people!! Stefan and I also spend more time together since we have less places to go and hide to watch Netflix. It was easy to go and watch our own shows when we had two living rooms.

If you have any questions that I didn’t answer let me know. We definitely got lucky with our apartment and for that I am very thankful.

What Babywearing Means to Us

first timeIMG_6714“You’ve got your hands full”
The comment most said to me as I’m out with my four young daughters. This comment always gives me a chuckle because my hands are free and usable thanks to babywearing.

Being able to do life without the stress of keeping our kitangeIMG_7293little ones close is an amazing thing. Babywearing has allowed us to do and see so much.

My journey started the first time I wrapped my oldest at 3 days old in a woven that was poorly wrapped and not tightened properly (She is 3 days old in that picture on the top left). Now 5.5 years later I’m able to swing my fourth baby onto my back in a traditional African Kitenge without breaking a sweat.

IMG_2563Babyweariimageng allows me to keep those little pieces of my heart that I have birthed into this big world close to me for just a little longer. It calms the spirit of the most wild toddler, and the inconsolable infant. It takes our family on adventures and creates memories to cherish always.

Babywearing can take you to places you never thought possible with a young child. TIMG_6303o get through a busy IMG_0808airport, on your way to a grand adventure. Or to go on a hike to find the perfect sunset while keeping baby close yet still apart of the show. Babywearing gets you where you need to go.

Babywearing is not always flashy and exciting. Some days it allows supper to be made or a room to be vacuumed. It 248656_10150197706218796_72571_nallows a hot meal to be eaten, or one more cup of coffee to be consumed. It is the moments when you are able to pace your halls with a sick little one and your arms don’t grow tired. It is the times
when an older sibling can get some one on one time with Mama while the baby naps on your chest. It allows work to get done in a job that never slows, in a world that never stops spinning.IMG_1252

Babywearing is both a sanity saver and a life giver. An extension of yourself, and an extra set of hands. A long lasting hug, and a kissable head. A place for a small head to rest while life moves all around them. That is what babywearing is to us.

Confession of a Barbie Loving Mom

imageA year and a half ago I found all of my old Barbie’s. I loved my Barbie’s as a kid and kept them in great condition. I never cut their hair or drew on them like other kids. In fact I played with them until I was probably 11 or 12. I was so excited to pass them on to my girls.

imageCapri and Payson loved them. Unfortunately they were rather rough with my beloved perfect condition 25 year old Barbie’s. So we now have a Barbie with one leg and two Barbie’s who have heads that pop off randomly. I was so sad. So Barbie’s went away for a little while.

imageToday is a snow day however so I brought the Barbie’s up and they are happily playing fighting and arguing with them. It is driving me nuts. But they are playing.

Here is my confession. Because it is a hot topic right now with the announcement of the new Barbie’s that come in many shapes. Here is the thing, I think it is great that they are branching out and making different looking Barbie’s…but I don’t think original Barbie’s actually have this horrible negative impact that so many people try and place on them. I don’t remember once thinking while playing with my Barbies, “oh I wish I had a tiny breakable waist and uncomfortable looking feet”. I didn’t try and diet and workout to look like my dolls, because that’s just it, they are dolls.

I instill healthy body image thoughts into my girls and have zero concerns about them comparing themselves to our size 00 dolls. I don’t hear little conversations wondering how they can have poofy blonde hair or perky plastic boobs. Instead they are talking about taking care of the Barbie babies and playing house. imageSo little girls play on. Use your imaginations and have fun playing make believe. Don’t allow adult stereotypes to pollute your brain and hearts. Be innocent for a little longer and enjoy that your Barbie can ride the magical unicorn pony without shame. image

The importance of family photos

image

Do you ever find yourself looking through your photos only to realize you are not in them? A family trip to the zoo, or playground and it appears to only be your spouse and children on the adventure. I decided I didn’t want that. I want photos on our outings and of our everyday life that include all of us. imageMy iPhone has a timer in the camera app so I find places to prop it and jump in the picture. I would love a remote so I can take more candid pictures. But I love having photos of us all doing things like decorating cookies or having family game night.imageWe are able to capture memories and make sure that one day when our kids go through our photos they have ones of all 6 of us. image

We have also discovered that our stroller cup holders work great as a tripod.

imageAnd on the rare occasion there is no where to set up for a photo we have gotten good at groupies via my husbands long arms or mirrors.

And now that I have written this I realized I should try and get more family photos of the 6 of us.

So set up your phone or camera and set the 10 second timer and take some photos of your family doing everyday family things. Leave your kids with photos of everyone and don’t just be the mom or dad behind the camera.

Edit it add our new family pics hahahaimage Continue reading

Laundry With 4 Girls

laundry

Laundry with 4 little girls means a million outfit changes a day and a giant pile of clothes for Mama to wash. I suck at laundry, I will just start by saying that. I hate doing laundry, I suck at folding laundry, and I really suck at putting laundry away.

I let the laundry pile up until the basket of clothes is taller than my 2 year old. That is three loads of laundry to do. And my least favourite part is after it all comes out and I have to sort all of the clothes between the four girls.

So I came up with a game plan to make it a bit easier on me.
washI decided that instead of having one laundry basket for all four I would have one for each of them. But then came the realization that four laundry baskets would take up a lot of room so I scratched that idea. I went to Amazon and found these awesome cotton laundry bags.

bagshung upMy oldest two recognize their names so I bought some sharpies in their favourite colours and wrote a name on each bag. Then I had to find a coat hook to hang them up on. Thankfully my parents had one in their garage still in the box with four hooks. Perfect. Stefan hung up the coat hooks for me in the bathroom at a height that worked for the girls. After I hung up each bag I brought the girls in and had them find their names on the bags and explained that their dirty clothes went in their bag. So far so good.

Now when I do laundry I can just grab one bag and wash the clothes in that one bag. When it comes out of the dryer I can quickly sort the clothes by shirts, pants, dresses and toss them in my redneck dresser for them. Yes those are milk crates, and yes it is messy. But I don’t care and it works. This is Capri and Payson’s closest and they know where their clothes go. So this is my solution for laundry with four little girls.
