Second Born

Payson

I feel like Payson doesn’t get enough blog time. So this will be all about her.

Payson will be ONE in THREE WEEKS. I cannot believe it. She is so funny, and gives such amazing hugs and snuggles. She still doesn’t nap very often, but when her sister is sleeping she has so much fun playing with all the toys by herself.

She cried for the first 6 months of her life. NON STOP. And one day I put her down around 6 months of age and she started to crawl, I have no idea how she learned. She has not stopped moving since that time. She started walking around furniture at 7 months, and started walking by herself at 10 months.

climberShe is really tiny so it is adorable watching her walk around. She weighs around 16-17lbs and is just a skinny mini. She loves to climb onto anything she can haul herself up onto. She still nurses very often, and I love our time together. She usually ends up in bed with us around 6 in the morning so we get to have lots of time snuggled close. She also loves me wearing her in one of our carriers, it means she gets to be extra close to mommy, which is perfect for her.

She loves saying Dada, Mama and I am pretty sure she says KITTY. She also really likes going “aawwww” whenever she does something she wants us to see or notice.

She really loves playing peek-a-boo, and laughs so much when you tickle her. One of her favourite things is to snuggle a doll or stuffed animal, and she loves to put anything she can find over her head.

She has 1 tooth that she got when she was almost 11 months old and there is a second tooth coming…soon I hope. She has found that she can eat even MORE food with that one tooth and loves to eat anything and everything. We did BLW (Baby Led Weaning) with her and she has always been a great eater.

bath

She is finally starting to like the bath, or at least tolerate it. BUT she will only stay in and not cry if it is Stefan giving her the bath. Otherwise she wants me to hold her. But it is nice that she is getting clean more often and not screaming the whole time.

Speaking of Stefan; Payson is finally starting to really love on her daddy. She was very attached to me for the first part of her life and didn’t really care for anyone but me. But now she hugs and snuggles with Stefan and he could not be more thrilled to have another little lady in love with him.

So in three weeks you will get to read another little post all about my baby turning ONE!!!!

Baby Led Weaning Blog

Hey everyone, I will be blogging over at the new Baby Led Weaning Blog started by Joyful Abode.

This new blog is a combination of a bunch of other families who are doing baby led weaning. It will help educate and give ideas to those currently or wanting to start BLW. I will be one of the weekly bloggers on it, so hop on over and check it out. It was just started so there are only a few posts but enjoy.

This will be in addition to this blog so no fear you can still read about our wonderful life here at As Time Flies.

Coffee and Bananas

I LOVE coffee. I started drinking it when I was probably 12 or so and I just love it. When I was younger I really just drank it because it made me crazy and I liked that, then as I got older (like high school) I drank it because it helped me sleep. Yes thats right it helped me sleep, I was so addicted to it that I couldn’t shut my brain off without it.

A friend of mine sent me coffee from Brazil while he was there and my mom said it smelled like an ash tray, it was so GOOD (it didn’t taste like an ash tray, though I have never tried one).

Anyway my favorite time of year is this time of year because Tim Hortons does Roll up the Rim (buy a drink and roll up the rim for a chance to win stuff for those that don’t know). So I love getting coffee at Tim’s because it gives me a chance to win free things which is also another favorite of mine. I had my first Roll up the Rim of the season today and I lost…like normal (in high school one of my teachers would stop class for me to Roll up the Rim just to see me lose). Also I realized I have become addicted to coffee again (I had cut back for a while, but started up again in the last few months). I knew it was bad because we were in the grocery store and I could not put a sentence together. My coffee was sitting in the car waiting for me and I downed it once we got back in the car. So I love coffee.

In other news Capri had banana for the first time today. I know it is the first food for many kids but Stefan is allergic to them so I was terrified to feed them to her. She loved it and ate half of the banana (she would have had the rest but I had eaten it already). Also just to show how amazing I am at spelling I have to sing the b-a-n-a-n-a-s song when I spell banana every single time.

Well that is all. I think I either need more coffee or I need to put my glasses on I have a headache…gross.

More Baby Led Weaning

We have been doing Baby Led Weaning for almost 2 months now and loving it. Capri has been fed with a spoon on two occasions (once for soup and once for yogurt) and it was not fun at all and really messy. I love that we can eat dinner as a family and I am  not trying to spoon feed a baby who wants to spoon feed herself while I am trying to eat my own food. It is so much fun to watch her try new foods that have actual texture and are not mush.

I cannot even list everything she has eaten now. A few new things though are cheese, broccoli, spinach, strawberries, peppers, roast beef, melon, arrowroot cookies, onions,  asparagus and a lot more things I can’t think of.

I am always so amazed when she bites off too big of a piece of food and tries to swallow it. Her eyes get all watery and red and she starts to cough and always gets that piece back up. And it is amazing how even with out teeth she is able to bite chunks of food off. The other day I heard her chewing her apple with those hard gums of hers.

I also love that so far she LOVES everything we have given her. It seems like people who do purees have to fight with their kids to eat the really gross foods (probably because they are really gross in puree form), but Capri loves everything so far. I am excited for when her teeth come in and she can chew her food more (finding chunks of carrot in her diaper is scary sometimes).

Baby Led Weaning

The picture really shows how fun Baby Led Weaning can be haha.

We waited until Capri was 6 months to start solids (okay she was like 2 days short of being 6 months), but still we waited.

We decided that Baby Led Weaning (BLW) was the best option for us as a family. Capri has been trying to eat our food for months now and I did not see purees being an option.

I found it hard to find a lot of information out there on BLW, but I found enough information through a few websites and some Twitter and Facebook moms that had done it as well. In the end it is really simple; baby eats real food and not purees.

What I love about BLW is that I can eat my meals and Capri can eat her meals at the same time and I do not have to worry about trying to feed her from a spoon while I am trying to eat. I make some breakfast and share with her and we enjoy our time.

I love that we still have a breastfeeding relationship. She still has the same needs for breastfeeding as she did before because that is where her main source of nutrition comes from. I feed her before we eat a meal or have a snack so she has something in her tummy so she does not get frustrated with being hungry and learning to feed herself.

A quick rundown on how BLW works is this: by the age of 6 months some babies have the capabilities to pick up pieces of food and move it to their mouths. Even without teeth they can chew items of food that are easily squished between your fingers. Babies have a reflex that allows them to move food from the back of their throats to the front of their mouths if they are choking. BLW is something you do with your baby; in other words you do not leave them with some food and go do something else. You watch them and encourage them. You eat with them.

BLW allows a child to first learn to chew and then swallow (while purees they learn to swallow and then chew). This helps babies transition from different foods and textures much more smoothly. By allowing your child to choose how much and what to eat, they are more likely to like more foods than if they are forced to eat foods by spoon feeding.

So far Capri has eaten and enjoyed the following foods in the last month:

  • toast with butter
  • avocado (sliced into wedges with skin still on for something to hold)
  • potato wedges
  • sweet potato wedges
  • pasta
  • apples
  • pears
  • oranges, clementines
  • croissants
  • pizza crust
  • turkey (and gravy)
  • chicken
  • steak
  • corn
  • green beans
  • hummus
  • rice cakes
  • carrots
