Zalah Leyden’s Home Birth

41 weeksMy due date was October 15th, my first 3 babies were born at 40 weeks 1 day, 40 weeks, and 40 weeks. I had high hopes that my fourth would follow suit. My first 3 labours went like this, lose mucus plug, start contractions 3 minutes apart; first labour was 10 hours from first contraction to birth, second labour was 3 hours and 56 minutes from first contraction birth, and third labour was 1 hour and 57 minutes from first contraction to birth. So my expectations for this labour were to sneeze and have a baby. I went to my 40 week appointment on my due date and was 4cm, which meant things were looking promising. My midwives said they would see me later most likely.

Well October 15th came and went, and then each day came and went, and then it was October 22nd and I was 41 weeks. I went to my appointment and asked for my fourth sweep (I had gone earlier in the week for one). Once again I was told I was 4cm but certainly looked ready to give birth. I stopped for a Starbucks on the way home because you can do whatever you want when you are a week overdue. I spent the evening watching Mighty Ducks 2 and eating Apple Crisp, because again you can do whatever you want at that point. I went to bed ready to take the girls to my parents the next day so I could go to fetal assessment the next day to check up on Zalah.

birth roomOctober 23rd dawned bright and early with me having to run to the bathroom because I had to pee. Except I just kept peeing…well not really but I was leaking fluid. We got the girls ready to go and the fluid was not stopping and I was having non-timeable contractions. I told Stefan I was going to call the midwife instead of going and that we should call my parents to come and get the girls instead of us taking them in. The midwife agreed to come over to see where we were at since my fast labour history promised a quick delivery. I also called my doula Darla to come over.

first touchFor the next few hours I sat on a ball and rocked back and forth. I walked around our birth room (aka our guest room), and kept having contractions. Eventually they started coming more regular. My midwife checked me to see where I was at and to check to see if my water had actually broken since I was leaking so bad. Well she checked me and I was still 4cm and my water was still intact. Which meant I just had a hind leak. I was so disappointed that nothing was happening. Labour was taking longer than I had expected and this played with my mind. The hours ticked by and I could not feel her engaging which worried me. I ended up crawling onto the bed to rest except contractions started coming faster and stronger. My amazing husband, and my wonderful doula were awesome and stroked my arms and head through each contraction talking me through it. I wanted to give up, and I was angry at how long it was taking. I still could not feel her head moving down, and my water was still intact. The midwife wanted to check me again but I refused because I was not getting any breaks between contractions and I didn’t want anyone to check me.

newI kept feeling like I needed to push, but I also knew she was not where she needed to be for me to push which made every contraction that much worse. I flipped onto my side in hopes that it would help and my contractions came on stronger and my water broke. With my water also came meconium. The next few minutes were a bit crazy. All of a sudden I felt her head drop down into place and I knew I needed to push her out. Everyone was telling me to push slowly and to ease her out. Well that didn’t work. With the next contraction I pushed and her head and whole body shot out rather fast. She was placed on my chest right away. But she was not crying. Suddenly her colour changed and she went limp. The midwife clamped and cut the cord and whisked Zalah to the table. They gave her a few puffs of oxygen and rubbed her with towels. It felt like an eternity waiting to hear a cry. I remember feeling so scared. And then that first cry came and she was handed back to me.

weightI was able to nurse her and all felt right with the world. I didn’t need stitches which was a first for me and that made those first few bonding moments even better. Her breathing was rapid for the first few hours and eventually came down to an okay rate. She weighed 8lbs 1oz, and was 21.45 Inches long, she was born October 23rd, 2015 at 1:47pm.

I loved having a homebirth. My bed is so much more comfy than a small hospital bed, and my pillows are way better. My shower is cleaner and so is my toilet. The fact that I could make the room a peaceful place leading up to her birth allowed me to be in a space that made me feel safe and secure. After the birth I was able to take my time getting up and cleaning off in my shower, I didn’t feel rushed. While I Zalahwas showering my doula stripped my bed and threw in a load of laundry. I came out to fresh clean sheets, and when I got into bed my favourite fluffy blanket was put on top of me and it was warm from the dryer. During my labour I had Jack Johnson playing, and lavender essential oil in the diffuser. I was encouraged to eat and drink, and never had the pressure of pain meds, IVs, and constant monitoring.

Our big girls are in love with their new sister, and Stefan and I love our family full of girls. And this was the best picture of the four of them hahaha.

Gilbert Girls

Lyra Nadine’s Birth Story

40 weeks

This pregnancy with baby Gilbert 3 has been a crazy ride. It was such a different pregnancy than with my first two. First we were not able to find out the gender which drove me crazy, and second everything just seemed different. I had never really had pre-labour with the first two, but I felt like I could go into labour at ANY minute with this pregnancy.

My due date according to my last period was December 20th, according to my dating ultrasound my due date was December 21st. I of course went with the first date because it was the closest date, but the doctors went with the 21st. So on December 19th I went for my 40 week appointment in Bridgewater, which is where I was suppose to deliver and also happens to be an hour and 20 minute drive from our house. While at my appointment I asked for a sweep and was told I was 3cm, so I was excited and hopeful that something would start fast or at least within a few hours like my last two pregnancies.

We went out and walked around Wal-mart and went to supper and nothing was happening so we decide we would head to Halifax to stay with my parents instead of going home. My parents were planning on meeting us in Bridgewater when I went into labour so we figured if we were already at their house we would have one less thing to worry about (getting 2 toddlers up and ready while mommy is in labour). Stefan and I dropped the girls off and went to the mall to walk around. I was not feeling any closer to labour after walking for a while and I just wanted to go back to my parents house. Nothing happened that night and I was so sad. Friday came and again nothing happened. I convinced Stefan though that we should stay in Halifax just one more night because this baby WAS GOING TO COME!!! I played Wii Tennis, I danced, I bounced on a ball and the only thing that led me to believe that a baby could come soon was that I was slowly losing my plug all day, but besides that I had nothing to go on.

DriveI ended up falling asleep on the couch around midnight and sleept for an hour and half when Payson woke up crying, so I went into the bedroom and nursed her for a bit and put her back to bed. I crawled into bed and then all of a sudden I got a contraction that I knew was for real. I looked at the clock at it was 1:47am. I stayed in bed for the next few contractions that were coming every 3 minutes and finally I told Stefan that I was pretty sure I was in labour and I was going to go out into the living room to walk a bit. I didn’t even make it past the bathroom when I had to run back in to pee, and I lost my plug. I quickly let Stefan know that we needed to leave as my contractions were getting stronger and were still 3 minutes apart. We were on the road around 2:20am and made the 20 minute drive into the hospital.

6cm

We arrived at the IWK hospital (the one I was not suppose to deliver at), and went in to register. Since I was not suppose to deliver there I had to answer a ton of questions to register myself (I was pre-registered at my hospital). I kept apologizing when I could not answer questions and the girl registering me told me I was the politest lady in labour she had ever encountered. After that a nurse came down and took me into a triage room to ask me a few hundred more questions. She suggested we start heading upstairs so I could be checked to see if I should be admitted. I got into an exam room and was checked and she found out I was 6cm. My contractions went from 3 minutes to 1-2 minutes apart within a few short contractions and Stefan had to put a cold cloth on my neck. The nurse quickly took us to a delivery room. On the way I had to stop multiple times for contractions and again I kept apologizing, I also had Stefan stop and get me a huge cup of ice because I was really thirsty. We got into a room and I changed out of my sweat pants and into the skirt I would wear to deliver (much comfier than those hospital gowns). I was leaning over the bed and I quickly told the nurse that I thought I had progressed since my check a few minutes ago, so I got onto the bed for another check and I was now 8cm and having contractions on top of each other.

bornThe intern doctor and nurse realized that the baby was coming fast and called the attending doctor to get down into my room as fast as she could. As soon as she was there I had a contraction and my water broke which is when they realized that there was meconium in my water and they then had someone call the NICU doctor to come to our room. I pushed for a few minutes and her head came out which is when they realized her cord was around her neck and I was told to stop pushing. They took the cord off of her neck and I pushed the rest of her out with one more push. She kind of slid out and fell onto the table in her own poop. They quickly cut her cord and had to rush her over to have the meconium pumped out of her. She only made a couple of noises before they had to stick a tube into her mouth to suck everything out of her stomach and sinuses.

first hugThey were also looking at her umbilical cord because they thought it looked like it was only one artery instead of two, but after looking it over really well they discovered that it was all good. If it had been only one they would have to do a bunch of tests to make sure she was okay for a bunch of different things.

They finally put her on my chest and soon after she had her first feed and did excellent. I had a few tears which they stitched up, and told me that I had some of the straightest tears they had ever seen. She was born at 3:44am on daddyDecember 21st, just 1 hour and 56 minutes after my first contraction. She weighed 8lbs and 2 ounces and was 20 and 3/4 inches long. If we had gone home to Shelburne we would not have made it to Bridgewater in time for her to be born, and with the complications I am very thankful we decided to stay in Halifax for one more night instead of having her on the highway. She was also nameless for a day because we only had a boys name picked out. After going through many name ideas we picked Lyra Nadine (Lyra is pronounced like Lyric but with an “a”, and Nadine is pronounced Na-dean). Lyra was a little girl I met in a village in Ukraine while I was there in 2008.

meetingWe got settled in our room and after Stefan went back to my parents and slept a bit he brought Capri and Payson in to meet Lyra. They love her to death and are being amazing big sisters. My parents also came to visit and to take the girls back to their place. We decide to get an early discharge and were on our way back to my parents by 5pm. We had to go back to the hospital the next day for all of her bloodwork, which we did after we went to my home church for service (Lyra is a keener like that, she is a great pastors kid).

She is a great sleeper so far and some how sleeps through her sisters crazy screaming and hugs and kisses. She is a very relaxed baby which is very wonderful.

Payson Malia’s Birth Story

39 weeks part 2May 8th 2012 I was 39 weeks and 6 days pregnant. I went to my OB for my 40 week appointment with very little hope that I would have a baby soon. So many people talk about pre-labor signs they have and contractions. I didn’t get those with Capri and I was not really getting them with Payson. In fact I felt like I had another month left of pregnancy. I felt really great and was not that big just anxious to meet our new addition.

I was not planning on getting anything done to start labor but I decided to get my membranes swept because we have to go down and do some final things with our new job on May 18th. My OB checked me and said I was 3cm and did the sweep. I went home and felt NOTHING. No cramping, I didn’t have any spotting, in fact I felt totally normal. I went to bed that night deciding that the sweep had not worked and that she would never come.

At 4am I woke up with the need to pee, so I went to the bathroom as fast as I could IMG_1531and started to lose my mucus plug. I had a couple of contractions but was able to go back to sleep and didn’t wake up again until 6am when all of a sudden I had contractions every 3 minutes. They were not super painful, but they kept coming. Stefan and I got up and he had breakfast and I sat on the couch contracting. Around 6:50 we decided to wake Capri up and let her have breakfast. Even though my contractions were coming every 3 minutes they were not that strong but I felt that we should get to the hospital. I packed the rest of Capri’s things up and at 7:30 dropped her off at our friend’s house (which was very hard for me because I have never left her for very long).

IMG_1547We had an hour drive to the hospital, though we made good time and got there at 8:20. The whole drive we listened to Queen and I hummed my way through contractions that were now every 2 minutes apart. We arrived at the hospital and registered, went upstairs and we were given a room. I told the nurses I didn’t want any drugs/IV or any monitors attached to me. They allowed me to put my own clothes on for the birth (tank top, sports bra and a jersey skirt) and I got myself set up.

I had Stefan put the birth ball up on the bed for me and I kneeled and leaned over it through contractions which were still coming every 2-3 minutes. I found out later that the nurses didn’t really think I was in active labor at this point. They told me to tell them if I felt the need to push though, and I felt like I needed to. They got me to lay back so they could check me (this was so annoying and painful). They checked and said I was only 4-5cm and that I was not allowed to push and I still had a bit to go. At this point I internally freaked out because I really did not want drugs but it was getting bad and I didn’t think I could go much longer without them.

I started to eat my labor-aid slushy I made to keep myself hydrated, after a few IMG_1567spoonful’s I started contracting and they would not stop. I was not getting any breaks and they were coming fast and strong. Stefan had Aerosmith playing by my head and I hummed and breathed my way through each contraction. I kept telling the nurses that I had felt like I had to push, so as much as I tried not to my body took over and would push a little with each contraction. I had incredible nurses who helped me control my breathing and showed Stefan how to push on my back (he was amazing). They made me lay down again to check me and I was 9cm (I also freaked out at the Dr. while he was checking IMG_1573me and told him to get out). I had them flip me back up on the ball and I informed the whole room of nurses and the doctor that I would not be pushing this baby out on my back but on my hands and knees with the birth ball. They told me I had to turn around if I wanted to do that and put the ball at the top of the bed. I freaked out at this because I didn’t think I could move. I had another contraction and I felt my water break all down my leg. They helped me get turned around between my next contraction and I informed them that I was going to start pushing. The other doctor quickly checked me and said I was 10cm. It was around 9:50am at this point. I started to push with all I had, I was screaming and the doctor said if I stopped screaming and breathed I could push better so that is what I did. I pushed and pushed and 6 minutes later I pushed Payson Malia out (9:56am, only 4 hours after contractions actually started).

IMG_1579I was trying to see her between my legs, and told them to hold off on clamping the cord for a bit. They finally clamped and cut the cord. I allowed them to take her and weigh her since I had to get myself flipped around before I could hold her (she was 7lbs 15oz and a little over 20 inches long). Finally they placed my little baby in my arms and we snuggled. I was able to deliver my placenta and had some local numbing done so I could be stitched up (which HURT like crazy). I had some second degree tears which I assume happened because she came out so fast. I was able to nurse Payson while this was happening and she latched on super well.

After we were settled in our room Stefan drove home to pick up Capri only hours after we had dropped her off. She got to come back and meet her sister. She was a little scared of her at first but seems to love her a lot now with tons of kisses. We spent the next couple of days in the hospital because IMG_1618her bilirubin (jaundice test) was a little low, we got out Friday morning. She seems to be an amazing sleeper and nurse-er. She is also a screamer. All the nurses commented on how loud she was.

I have to say that I felt so empowered during this birth. With Capri I was on my back and hooked up to an IV, fetal monitor and blood pressure cuff; I had an epidural and gave birth on my back. But With Payson I felt so in control and did what I wanted to do and it was incredible.

My Baby is 1–Her Birth Story

Month 1PLEASE NOTE: if you are a prude, get offend easily or are grossed out by birth stories you should probably stop reading. If however you are none of those things read on. Month 2

On Friday June 18th 2010 I had my 40 week check up. This date was my original due date from my first ultra sound and the date that my doctor went by (I went by the 15th which was the date we got at our second ultra sound because it was closer). At my doctor’s appointment I found out that I had finally dilated from 1cm (which I had been since 35 weeks) to 3cm and 75% effaced. She swept my membranes for the second time (she did it the week before as well).

Month 3I had been losing my mucus plug since the day before and later Friday evening I started to get my show. I didn’t want to get myself excited because I didn’t want to be let down if I didn’t go into labour so I just went on with my evening. We went out for a walk and went to the mall and got some Chinese for supper (BIG MISTAKE). Around midnight I started get coMonth 4ntractions, I started timing them and they were coming every 3-6 minutes, but didn’t seem to be getting stronger so I didn’t think too much of it. I tried going to bed a bit after midnight but could not sleep because I was uncomfortable, so I came out and watched TV with Stefan. Around 1:30am we went to bed and Stefan slept and I didn’t, so at 3am both of us came out and watched TV until 5am when we decided we should head to the hospital.

Month 5When we arrived they checked me and I was 4cm along. They asked me if I wanted drugs and I said no. I really wanted to try to have her naturally (I am terrified of needles and was really scared of the epidural). I had to be put on an IV right away because I was Strep B+. By the time 8am came around I had already thrown up my Chinese food from the night before because I was in so much pain and I decided to get the epidural. It was really hard for me to finally sayMonth 6 yes to it because I had been very set on going naturally. They could not get me the epidural right away so I was given fentanyl via IV, which I highly recommend because it really helped with getting the epidural. It took two shots to get the epidural needle into me because the first time I was getting electric shock feelings in my back and legs.

Month 7Right after I got it my doctor that would deliver Capri and a student doctor came in and checked me and broke my water. I was now up to 9cm and we did a few practice pushes. Stefan had run to get some breakfast and got back just in time to get ready to help me push. At 9am I started pushing, and it was nice because even though I had the epidural I was able to feel when I needed to push. Stefan was very brave and helped the nurse hold my legs when I pushed. He watched my whole delivery process. I pushed for the next hour and a bit and the doctor came in to help with the end of it. I did notMonth 8 like the end of the pushing it BURNED so bad. I pushed and pushed and they finally put the vacuum on her head to help get her out. She finally came out and the first thing I saw was the student doctor holding her leg and it looked like she was hanging upside down over the edge of the bed. I told him to be careful and to not drop her, he then showed me that he had her head as well. She arrived at 10:19am on June 19th, 2010. She was 21 inches, 8lbs 14 and 1/4 oz. They put her on my chest and let her cord pulse until it was done and then they cut it.

Month 9They took her to clean her and I delivered the placenta which was not bad at all, it just fell out. They started to stich me up and I only had one real tear and it was only first degree. It was however not very clean and the doctor and student doctor took their time figuring out the best way to stich me up. At one point the student Month 10doctors cell phone started ringing and he couldn’t answer it and it was really funny. They told me they were taking their time to make me look nice down there just in case I decided to go into the porn industry in the future. The doctor also almost sewed the interns’ finger onto me, and we joked that it would be really awkward having him around.

Month 11Everything after that went fairly well. I did faint after getting out of the shower however but Stefan caught me (I had the water too hot), it scared the crap out of me. We breastfed for the first time within the hour after she was born, and have been breastfeeding for 1 whole year now. Month 12
