Today I was at moms group with a few of my friends and their little ones. One of my friends has a daughter who will be 2 in a few months and I watched as she tried to color with regular crayons. The problem was at this age little chubby fingers have a hard time holding onto the crayons. I have seen many articles online on how to make chunky crayons so I decided to give it a go.
You first take a bunch of crayons that are either already broken or you can break them up. Put matching colors into a greased muffin tin. I used a regular size muffin tin because the mini muffin tins are small enough that I worried about them being a choking hazard.
After breaking up all the pieces you will want to put it in a pre-heated oven (around 300 degrees).
After they have been in the oven for about 5-8 minutes you will notice that your crayons have turned to liquid. Take them out of the oven and let them sit on top of the stove for a few minutes to cool just a bit.
Pop your muffin tin into the freezer for about 45 minutes. This will cool them the fastest. You can leave them on the counter to cool but that will take much longer.
Once you take them out of the freezer you will want to pop them out of the muffin tins. I did find this some what hard to do. I think if i owned silicon muffin liners or a silicon muffin tin it would have been easier. Two of mine broke in half so I was left with these 8.
Great for little fingers and big peoples as well.
