The 5:30am Wake Up

My almost 5 year old and my just turned 3 year old are rise with the sun kind of people. They are also the come into Mommy and Daddy’s room and talk about how they are awake, how they need to pee, and how they are very hungry kind of people. Of course they come the long way around the bed so they are right next to my head. I am not a rise with the sun kind of person, and neither is Stefan. Oh and our kids have zero volume control, only one setting and that is loud.

I have read the blogs and books all about how you should embrace your kids getting up early. Get up with them they say. Read your Bible and savour a cup of coffee, exercise, make a hearty breakfast for your loved ones. Ummm yeah that is so not happening in my life.

So like every good parent I trust my almost 5 year old and just turned 3 year old. They get themselves a yogurt from the fridge eat most of it and paint with the rest, eat a banana or 6, and maybe if they are feeling extra fun they will each take a bite from a different apple and leave the rest of the apple on the couch for their 17 month old sister to enjoy later.

On the rare occasion I am feeling more awake, aka they keep talking in my ear about being hungry, I or Stefan will go out and pour a bowl of cereal for them with milk. And they also know how to turn the TV on and get it to channel 26 which is Treehouse TV, aka the channel with all of the annoying shows like Dora and Caillou. This keeps them occupied for a while and I am perfectly fine admitting I allow a television with an annoying child who roams in the woods with a monkey who wears boots and a klepto fox to babysit them.

nailsNow on the rare occasion we will actually come out to find scenes such as this picture: which is the girls covered in my nail polish. The house had the wonderful chemical aroma of a salon and I was out of nail polish remover. But in the end I am okay with it if it means I get an extra hour or two of sleep to cope with the rest of the day.

Now I am off to drink a few cups of coffee to start my day and to see how many banana peels I can find. So if you are feeling bad about your early morning risers, know that you are in good and groggy company.

Glad to know I’m not alone in this. My four year old also rises super early and I am also not a morning person. She also goes straight for the yogurt, and then watches Netflix on my iPad. I would also prefer her doing all of that for me to sleep longer.
